From: Jonna Grohall [justasheep@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 14, 1998 11:32 AM To: Charles Hymes; Charles_Hymes@hp.com Subject: The e-mail hoax reply I sent To Whom it may concern, The email that was sent as a chain letter about the child with cancer is a hoax. I could have been someone who used all the addressed for my own use to send out anything I wanted to. Instead I wanted to send this warning. Please read it and check out the sites. I took time to find it. And forward it to all the people you sent the original letter to and to the ones who sent it to you. It is a dangerous thing to add your e-mail address to any chain letter. You never know what kind of list you could get on and it's dangerous to add people on your e-mail list as well. What did they ever do to deserve getting thier name on a list that might be sold or used for who-knows-what. Next time check first, don't just blindly follow!!!!! I hope you learned your lesson! askacs4@CANCER 10/14/98 12:11 PM Thank you for contacting us to determine the legitimacy of this mail. The American Cancer Society is not associated with the distribution of electronic chain mail. We have worked with major media outlets to discourage the sending and re-sending of such mail which does not benefit any charitable cause. We do know that unethical direct mail marketers use this scheme to collect names for what many refer to as junk email. Our best advice at this time is to ignore chain emails. We also have information posted on our website at http://www.cancer.org/chain.html and see http://www.nonprofit.net/hoax/self.html%20%20 http://www.nonprofit.net/hoax/hoax.html **The following is the original letter. (I cleaned it up first)** Dear All, I just received this mail from a friend of mine in College. Please respond to it. It will just mean employing a little bit of time and won't cost you a penny. All it needs is the heart for you to send this mail. PLEASE pass this mail on to everybody you know. It is the request of a little girl who will soon leave this world, as she has been a victim of the terrible disease called CANCER. Thank you for your effort, this isn't a chain letter, but a choice for all of us to save a little girl that's dying of a serious and fatal form of cancer. Please send this to everyone you know... or don't know. This little girl has 6 months left to live, and as her dying wish, she wanted to send a chain letter telling everyone to live their life to fullest since she never will. She'll never make it to prom, graduate from high school, or get married and have a family of her own. By you sending this to as many people as possible, you can give her and her family a little hope, because with every name that this is sent to, The American Cancer Society will donate 3 cents per name to her treatment and recovery plan. One guy sent this to 500 people!!!! So, I know that we can send it to at least 5 or 6. Come on you guys and gals if you're too selfish to take 10-15 minutes scrolling this and forwarding it to EVERYONE, then you are one sick person. Just think, it could be you one day. It's not even your $money$, just your time!!! PLEASE PASS THIS ON!!!! For more info contact the guy below. Dariel B.
